Across the region

The climate changes within the Sharon. These are the same figures for other towns:

Netanya10–17°C23–32°C61–72%553 mm
Kfar Saba10–17°C23–32°C62–73%646 mm
Hadera10–17°C23–32°C61–70%571 mm

These are outdoor figures. Indoors, air conditioning dries the air in summer and heating dries it even more in winter, so the air around your piano can be much drier than outside. An inexpensive hygrometer next to the piano shows what it actually lives in.

Climate data, 1991–2020 averages. Temperature and humidity: ERA5-Land reanalysis (Copernicus Climate Change Service / ECMWF), via Open-Meteo. Rainfall: Israel Meteorological Service stations, WMO climate normals (Gaash, Eyal, Gan-Shmuel).

What it means for your piano

Along the coast, in Herzliya, Netanya and Caesarea, the sea keeps the air humid much of the year, as in Gush Dan. A few kilometres inland, in Kfar Saba, Hod HaSharon or Even Yehuda, the climate is much the same, and these towns get some of the most rain on the coastal plain.

Many pianos in the Sharon live in houses rather than flats, often in living rooms with big windows and glass doors to the garden. Sun on the case, drafts from the garden and a cold tiled floor in winter all move the tuning, and direct sun fades and cracks the finish.

In the north of the region, Zichron Ya'akov and Binyamina sit on the slopes of the Carmel, a little higher and cooler, with more wind in winter.

Caring for a piano in the Sharon

  • Keep the piano out of direct sun, and away from glass doors and the air conditioner's airflow.
  • Use a dehumidifier in the humid summer months, aiming for about 45–50% in the room.
  • In winter, keep heaters and radiators a couple of metres away from the piano.
  • If the piano stands on a cold tiled floor, a rug under it helps keep it steady.

When to tune

Twice a year: in spring and in autumn, before and after the long air-conditioning season.

Questions from the Sharon

How often should a piano in Netanya or Herzliya be tuned?
Twice a year. The humid sea air and the air conditioning keep the pitch moving through the summer, so tune in spring and again in autumn.
My piano is next to a window to the garden. Is that a problem?
Sun and drafts are the most common causes of a piano that won't hold its tuning. Moving it to an inner wall, or closing the curtain in the afternoon, usually makes a clear difference.
Do you come to Hadera, Caesarea and Zichron Ya'akov?
Yes. We cover the whole Sharon, and north to Hadera, Caesarea, Pardes Hanna-Karkur, Binyamina and Zichron Ya'akov.
