Across the region
The climate changes within the Galilee. These are the same figures for other towns:
| Place | January | August | Humidity | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safed | 3–12°C | 19–31°C | 63–77% | 697 mm |
| Nahariya | 10–16°C | 23–30°C | 70–76% | 636 mm |
| Karmiel | 7–15°C | 22–32°C | 68–77% | 840 mm |
| Tiberias | 8–18°C | 24–35°C | 62–77% | 385 mm |
| Kiryat Shmona | 6–16°C | 22–33°C | 64–79% | 715 mm |
These are outdoor figures. Indoors, air conditioning dries the air in summer and heating dries it even more in winter, so the air around your piano can be much drier than outside. An inexpensive hygrometer next to the piano shows what it actually lives in.
Climate data, 1991–2020 averages. Temperature and humidity: ERA5-Land reanalysis (Copernicus Climate Change Service / ECMWF), via Open-Meteo. Rainfall: Israel Meteorological Service stations, WMO climate normals (ZEFAT, Evron, Yehiam, Kineret, Kefar-Giladi).
What it means for your piano
No region in Israel has more different climates in a short drive. On the coast, Nahariya and Akko are humid like the rest of the coastal plain. Up in the hills, Safed, at around 900 metres, has some of the coldest winters of any Israeli city, sometimes with snow, and the Upper Galilee is one of the rainiest parts of the country.
Then, less than an hour away, Tiberias lies about 200 metres below sea level by the Sea of Galilee, with long, very hot summers and air conditioning running for months. Kiryat Shmona, in the Hula Valley, has hot summer days and chilly winter nights.
So a piano in Safed needs protecting from heaters and winter damp, a piano in Tiberias from the air conditioner and the summer heat, and a piano in Nahariya from sea air. We adapt the tuning and the advice to where your piano actually lives.
Caring for a piano in the Galilee
- In the hills (Safed, Ma'alot, Karmiel): keep the piano away from heaters, and use a humidifier if the heated room gets very dry.
- In Tiberias and the valleys: keep the piano out of the air conditioner's airflow, and run the air conditioner steadily rather than on and off.
- On the coast (Nahariya, Akko): a dehumidifier in the humid months, and a rust check on each visit.
- Everywhere: an inner wall, out of direct sun, at about 45–50% humidity.
When to tune
Twice a year, in spring and in autumn. In Safed, tune after the heating season; in Tiberias, before and after the long summer.
