Across the region

The climate changes within the south. These are the same figures for other towns:

Ashdod10–16°C23–31°C66–71%517 mm
Ashkelon10–16°C23–31°C69–73%509 mm
Kiryat Gat9–16°C22–33°C59–72%509 mm

These are outdoor figures. Indoors, air conditioning dries the air in summer and heating dries it even more in winter, so the air around your piano can be much drier than outside. An inexpensive hygrometer next to the piano shows what it actually lives in.

Climate data, 1991–2020 averages. Temperature and humidity: ERA5-Land reanalysis (Copernicus Climate Change Service / ECMWF), via Open-Meteo. Rainfall: Israel Meteorological Service stations, WMO climate normals (Nir Galim, NEGBA).

What it means for your piano

Ashdod and Ashkelon are coastal cities: the sea keeps them humid for much of the year, with muggy summer nights and salt in the air close to the beach. Inland, towards Kiryat Gat, Sderot and Netivot, the climate gets drier, the rain decreases and the edge of the Negev is not far.

That dryness, and the dust that comes with it, is the other side of the region. On sharav days hot, dry wind from the desert can bring dust and drop the humidity sharply, and fine dust settles into the action and on the strings.

Many homes here, old and new, run the air conditioning for a large part of the year, so a steady room temperature makes a real difference to how long a tuning holds.

Caring for a piano in the south

  • On the coast: a dehumidifier in the humid months, and keep the piano off outside walls.
  • Inland: keep the lid closed and the windows shut on dusty sharav days.
  • Keep the piano out of the air conditioner's airflow, everywhere.
  • Aim for about 45–50% humidity in the room.

When to tune

Twice a year, in spring and in autumn. Pianos in dusty areas benefit from a cleaning of the action every few years.

Questions from the south

How often should a piano in Ashdod or Ashkelon be tuned?
Twice a year, in spring and autumn. The humid sea air and the air conditioning keep the pitch moving through the summer.
Dust gets into everything here. Does it affect the piano?
Yes, over time dust settles in the action and on the strings and dulls the sound. Keep the lid closed, close the windows on dusty days, and ask us to clean the action during a visit.
Do you come to Sderot, Netivot and Kiryat Gat?
Yes. We visit all the towns listed on this page.
