Across the region

The climate changes within Haifa and the Krayot. These are the same figures for other towns:

Kiryat Ata10–17°C24–32°C68–74%722 mm
Afula7–16°C23–35°C62–76%528 mm

These are outdoor figures. Indoors, air conditioning dries the air in summer and heating dries it even more in winter, so the air around your piano can be much drier than outside. An inexpensive hygrometer next to the piano shows what it actually lives in.

Climate data, 1991–2020 averages. Temperature and humidity: ERA5-Land reanalysis (Copernicus Climate Change Service / ECMWF), via Open-Meteo. Rainfall: Israel Meteorological Service stations, WMO climate normals (Haifa, Yagur, Sarid).

What it means for your piano

Haifa climbs from the bay up the slopes of the Carmel, and a piano's climate depends on where in the city it lives. Down by the sea and in the Krayot along Haifa Bay, the air is humid and salty; up on the Carmel it is cooler and windier, with more rain and damp, misty days in winter.

Inland, the Jezreel Valley around Afula has hotter, drier summer days and colder winter nights, while Kiryat Tivon and Yokneam, at the edge of the hills, sit somewhere in between.

Near the sea, rust on strings and tuning pins is the long-term risk, and sticky keys the everyday one. Up on the Carmel and in the valley, the bigger enemy is the swing between seasons, and between heating in winter and air conditioning in summer.

Caring for a piano in Haifa and the Krayot

  • In the bay and the Krayot, use a dehumidifier in the humid months and keep the piano off outside walls.
  • On the Carmel, keep the piano away from windows that let in the damp winter air, and from heaters.
  • In the Jezreel Valley, keep it out of the air conditioner's airflow in summer.
  • Aim for about 45–50% humidity in the room all year.

When to tune

Twice a year, in spring and in autumn. Pianos close to the sea benefit from a rust check on every visit.

Questions from Haifa and the Krayot

How often should a piano in Haifa be tuned?
Twice a year. Both the humid sea air downtown and the cold, damp winters on the Carmel move the pitch between seasons.
My piano is in a flat on the Carmel. Anything special?
Winters there are damp and windy, and heating dries the room out. Keep the piano away from the windows and from heaters, and a hygrometer will tell you whether you need a humidifier or a dehumidifier.
Do you come to Afula, Yokneam and Kiryat Tivon?
Yes. We cover Haifa, the Krayot and the towns of the Jezreel Valley listed on this page.
