James & Holmstrom grew out of the Holmstrom Piano Company, started by Anders Holmstrom in 1860, and took its name when L. C. James became a partner in 1874. It was known for a transposing piano whose keyboard action could be shifted to play in another key. Jacob Brothers bought the firm in 1900 and used the name until about 1929.
