Sohmer & Co.

Sohmer & Co. was founded in New York in 1872 by Hugo Sohmer and Joseph Kuder and stayed in the Sohmer family for 110 years, with a large factory in Astoria, Queens. The family sold it to Pratt, Read & Co. in 1982, after which production moved to Connecticut and then Elysburg, Pennsylvania. Samick later acquired the name but no longer makes Sohmer pianos.

Sohmer & Co. was a piano manufacturing company founded in New York City in 1871. Sohmer & Co. marketed the first modern baby grand piano, and also manufactured pianos with aliquot stringing and bridge agraffes, as well as Cecilian "all-inside" player pianos and Welte-Mignon-Licensee reproducing pianos. Sohmer pianos were owned by U.S. President Calvin Coolidge, and composers Victor Herbert and Irving Berlin. Sohmer was later purchased by Samick Music Corporation in Korea.
