Used piano inspection in Rishon LeZion

An expert opinion on a second-hand piano before you pay for it.

A used piano can be a great buy or an expensive mistake, and the difference is often invisible to the buyer. We meet you at the seller's home in Rishon LeZion or anywhere in the Gush Dan area, check the piano thoroughly, and tell you plainly what you're getting.

Why have a piano inspected before buying

Many used pianos for sale in Israel are decades old and have spent years in heat and humidity. Two pianos that look the same can be very different inside: one just needs a tuning, while the other has loose tuning pins or a cracked soundboard that make it impossible to keep in tune.

An inspection tells you whether the piano can be tuned to standard pitch and hold it, what work it needs now and in the near future, and roughly what that will cost, so you can negotiate the price or walk away.

When to book an inspection

  • You found a used piano on Yad2, Facebook Marketplace or a local group and want to know if it's worth the price.
  • The seller says it “just needs a tuning”.
  • The piano is old, or you don't know its make or age.
  • You're choosing between a few pianos and want an expert opinion.
  • You're about to pay movers to bring home a piano no one has checked.

What the visit includes

  • Tuning pins: whether they grip well enough to hold a tuning.
  • Soundboard and bridges: cracks, separations and other structural problems.
  • Strings: rust, previous breaks, and how far the piano is below pitch.
  • Action, keys and hammers: wear, sticking keys, moth damage and evenness of touch.
  • Pedals, the case, and the piano's age from its serial number.
  • A clear summary on the spot: what it needs, what that will cost, and our honest recommendation.

How long it takes

About an hour at the seller's location. We need the piano to be accessible, and the seller's permission to play it and open the lid and front panels.

How to prepare

  • Ask the seller for the make, model and serial number, and photos of the inside if possible.
  • Look up the piano's age with our serial number lookup.
  • Agree on a time with the seller when we can play the piano and open it up.
  • Don't pay a deposit or book movers until you have our opinion.

What to look for in Rishon LeZion's climate

Pianos that have lived in Rishon LeZion's humid sea air are prone to rust on the strings and tuning pins, and to sticky keys from swollen wood. We pay special attention to rust and to how firmly the tuning pins hold.

What it costs

We'll give you the price of the inspection when you book. If you decide to buy, the inspection also tells you what the first tuning will cost: by our cost calculator, about 350–500 ILS for an upright and 500–700 ILS for a grand in good condition, and more if it needs work or hasn't been tuned in years.

Frequently asked questions

Can you inspect a piano before I buy it?
Yes, that's the whole idea. With the seller's agreement, we meet you at the seller's home in Rishon LeZion or nearby and inspect the piano there, before any money changes hands.
Can't I just check the piano myself?
You can check the obvious things: whether every key plays and the pedals work. The problems that cost the most, like loose tuning pins, a cracked soundboard or a worn action, are hard to spot without experience and the right tools.
Will you tell me how old the piano is?
Usually, yes. We find the serial number and date the piano from it. You can also look it up yourself with our free serial number lookup.
What if the piano needs work?
We'll tell you what work it needs and roughly what it will cost, so you can factor it into your decision or negotiate with the seller. If you buy it, we can do the tuning and minor repairs afterwards.
